What is The Path to Change?
The Path to Change is a user-created guide supporting Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to beat anxiety disorders and addictions. The Path to Change isn’t proposing a new form of therapy–we’re not trying to replace the wonderful psychologists, therapists, counselors and neuroscientists in our lives. What we’re interested in is the practical application of what we learn in therapy. That’s special insight that only people who’ve lived through change can share. We recognize that real change and proactively improving mental health happens in the day-to-day activities of our lives, but that actually implementing change is tough, and complex. We’re making that easier by sharing our experiences and talking about what works, and what doesn’t.
I began writing The Path to Change when I was working as a business design and strategy consultant. The same tools I was using to help companies implement change also helped me succeed with Exposure & Response Prevention therapy. Although there’s a lively discussion in the business world about how to translate theories of change into practical action, that’s been lacking in the mental health sector, likely because we just don’t talk enough about mental health and share our experiences. So The Path to Change not only translates proven organizational change tools to the world of personal change and mental health, but also aims to be a catalyst for talking more openly about mental health because, well, hey, everybody has a brain.
We’ll publish digital versions first, with print to follow. Publishing digitally allows us to make the book more visual and easier to read without making the cost prohibitively high.
How can you participate?
There are three ways to participate:
01 Do an exercise (or two) from the beta version of the book and then submit a photo of your results along with comments about the exercise.
02 Read the beta version and share thoughts, feedback, and what you liked or didn’t like about it.
03 Share your story with others so they can learn from your experience and also see that they’re not alone in this struggle. You can share general stories about Exposure & Response Prevention or something more specific about a particular compulsion of yours, what motivated you to change, or a useful support you use to maintain your mental health, like exercise or meditation. There are prompts throughout the beta version of The Path to Change that indicate where we’re looking for people to participate.
