It was actually several years since I had last touched raw meat until I took a cooking class recently and the teacher made us all handle our meat whenever we cooked. For years, I would remover the plastic on a package of meat and then tip the package upside down and dump the contents into the frying pan.
OCD related to meat often has to do with an obsession that you’re going to get infected with salmonella or ecoli. Compulsive behaviors and obsession spring up around the handling of the meat, the cooking and then eating it. For someone with OCD, they can be absolutely certain, hours after a meal, that they’re going to get food poisoning from the meal they just ate.
The biggest change I’ve discovered now that I touch meat again, is that I focus more on cooking well, and when I think about contamination related to meat, I’m more worried about my hands getting the meat dirty than the other way around. Which I’d say is actually a good sign. When I cook now, it’s flavor of a meal that matters, not my chances of surviving the meal.
